Urinary diets: match the actual problem

A 'urinary health' label is not a diagnosis or a universal treatment. Cornell explains that stone types differ; International Cat Care stresses that not every cat benefits from the same diet. Choose with the veterinary team, including any other medical needs.

Ask what the diet is for

Is the aim a specific stone problem, recurrence management or more water through food? Ask about the exact food, treats, how it fits other conditions and the review date. Do not add urinary acidifiers or supplements simply because a food says urinary.

Do not starve a cat into switching

International Cat Care recommends careful, gradual change and says never to starve a cat into accepting a diet. Tell the clinic if a cat refuses a prescribed food. Different textures or a different plan may be possible. A cat who is unwell or recently treated needs individualized instructions.

Keep the plan interpretable

Record the food name, changes, appetite and other items actually eaten. Do not change several foods and supplements together without discussion. Ask when to reassess and what signs should trigger an earlier call. Food, water and home changes support care; they do not replace emergency treatment.
