Cat Urinary Notes

Encouraging water without forcing it

Clean water, accessible choices and an accepted wet diet can support a veterinary urinary plan. International Cat Care recommends gradual changes and attention to individual preferences. More drinking does not treat a blockage and a sudden increase in thirst also deserves a vet call.

Change the setup gently

Try a wide glass or ceramic bowl in a quiet, accessible spot away from litter and separate from food. Offer more than one location, particularly when pets compete. Keep the familiar source while introducing a new one so choice does not mean losing access.

A fountain is an option, not a cure

Some cats like moving water and others dislike noise. Introduce a fountain gradually, maintain fresh water and clean it and its filter according to the maker's directions. A fountain does not guarantee increased intake or prevent all urinary problems.

Food and measurements

Discuss wet food or adding water to food with the vet, especially on a prescribed diet. Bowl loss includes spills, evaporation and other pets, so it is not precise intake. Never force water by syringe: International Cat Care warns about stress and water entering the lungs. Suspected dehydration needs the clinic.
